Carrie P. Meek Scholarship Award Presented by the Carrie P Meek Foundation
Carrie P. Meek is an educator and politician, a native of Florida born and raised in Tallahassee. She attended Florida A&M University and received her MS degree from the University of Michigan, She taught at Bethune-Cookman University and Florida A&M University before moving to Miami and working at Miami-Dade Community College in 1961. Carrie Meek’s political career started when she ran for the Florida House of Representatives as a Democrat where she served until 1982. In 1983 she became a Florida State Senator and served until 1992. She served the 17th Congressional District and became the first black member of Congress from Florida since reconstruction. Her term ended in 2003.
Applicants are competing for scholarships up to $1,000 and no less than $500. Students must be currently enrolled and seeking a degree from a College or University in South Florida. Individuals must demonstrate a commitment to public service, through voluntary community work or other participation in community organizations or activities. The scholarship will be awarded at the 2022 ASPA Annual Awards event in June 2022.
Required Application Materials
- Proof of current enrollment in a College or University in South Florida.
- Unofficial academic transcripts demonstrating a GPA of 3.0 or greater.
- One (1) letter of recommendation from a professor or supervisor.
- Completed application form.
The deadline for submission is January 15th, 2022 at 5:00 PM.
